Margaret LeAnn Rimes, known simply as LeAnn Rimes, (born August 28, 1982) is an American singer-songwriter and actress, best known for her work in country music. She is best known for her rich vocals similar to legendary country music singer Patsy Cline,[1] and her rise to fame at the age of 13, becoming the youngest country music star since Tanya Tucker in 1972.[2]

Rimes made her breakthrough into country music in 1996. Her debut album, Blue, reached Number 1 on the Top Country Albums chart and was certified “multi-platinum” in sales by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album’s lead single of the same name (originally intended to be recorded by Patsy Cline in the early 1960s) became a Top 10 hit. With immediate success, Rimes attained widespread national acclaim for her similarities to Cline’s vocal style. When Rimes released her sophomore studio effort in 1997, You Light up My Life: Inspirational Songs, Rimes went more towards country pop material, which would set the trend for a string of albums that would be released into the next decade.[2][3] LeAnn Rimes is the youngest person to win a Grammy, and the first country singer to win the Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

Since her debut, Rimes has won many major industry awards, which include two Grammys, three ACMs, one CMA, twelve Billboard Music Awards, and one American Music award.[4] In addition, Rimes has also released ten studio albums and four compilation albums through her record label of 13 years, Asylum-Curb, and placed over 40 singles on American and international charts since 1996. She has sold over 50 million albums worldwide.

Rimes was born Margaret LeAnn Rimes in Pearl, Mississippi in 1982 to Belinda and Wilbur Rimes. Her family later moved to Garland, Texas in 1988, where Rimes was raised. As an only child, Rimes was showered with attention by her parents. She was singing by the age of two, was enrolled into vocal and dance training, and by the age of five was performing at local talent shows .[1][5] Rimes initially began her career in musical theatre, performing in a Dallas, Texas production of A Christmas Carol, and almost landed the lead part in the Broadway production of Annie. However, after appearing on the network television competition show, Star Search, Rimes decided to pursue a career in country music. Following her national television appearance, Rimes made a number of appearances on Johnnie High’s Country Music Revue in Arlington, Texas, which garnered the attention of national talent scouts.[5]

By the age of nine, Rimes was already an experienced singer. She toured nationally with her father and also regularly performed a cappella renditions of “The Star Spangled Banner” at the opening ceremonies of the Dallas Cowboys football games. In order to bring his daughter more national attention, he began recording her under the independent label, Nor Ja Vak when she turned eleven. She released three albums under the label between 1992 and 1996.[5]

Rimes was discovered by Dallas disc jockey and record promoter, Bill Mack. Mack was impressed by Rimes’ vocal ability, and over the following three years, he also made various attempts to bring Rimes to a mainstream level. The center of Mack’s plan to bring her success was his self-penned composition, “Blue,” which he had written 30 years before in the early 1960s. Mack claimed that the song was intended to be recorded and made a hit record by Patsy Cline, but she had been killed in a plane crash before ever recording the composition. By 1995, Mack was able to gain Rimes a contract with Curb Records, after record executives heard Rimes sing “Blue.”[1

Faith Hill (born Audrey Faith Perry on September 21, 1967) is an American country singer. She is known both for her commercial success and her marriage to fellow country star Tim McGraw. Hill’s voice (described as both soulful and raspy)[1] and careful song selection[2] have helped her to sell more than 40 million records and accumulate 8 number-one singles and 3 number-one albums on the Country charts.

Hill has been honored by the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music, the Grammy Awards, the American Music Awards and the People’s Choice Awards. Her Soul2Soul II Tour 2006 with husband McGraw became the highest-grossing country tour of all time.[3] In 2001, she was named one of the “30 Most Powerful Women in America” by Ladies Home Journal. In 2008, Faith Hill released her first Christmas album, titled Joy to the World.

Hill was born Audrey Faith Perry in Ridgeland, Mississippi, near Jackson, Mississippi. She was adopted as an infant and raised by a couple in the nearby town of Star. Her adoptive parents reared their two biological sons along with Hill in a devout Christian environment.[2]

Hill’s vocal talent was apparent early, and she had her first public performance, a 4-H luncheon, when she was seven.[4] In 1976, a few days before her 9th birthday, she attended a concert by Elvis Presley at the State Fair Coliseum, in Jackson, which impressed her deeply. By the time she was a teenager, Hill was a regular performer at area churches, even those not in her own Baptist denomination.[5] At 17, Hill formed a band that played in local rodeos. She briefly attended college at Hinds Community College in Raymond, Mississippi, but at 19 quit school to move to Nashville and pursue her dream of being a country singer. In her early days in Nashville, Hill auditioned to be a backup singer for Reba McEntire, but failed to secure the job.[2] After a stint selling T-shirts, Hill became a secretary at a music publishing firm.[4]

Apart from her quest for entry into the music industry, Hill also began working toward a more robust family life. In 1988 she married songwriter and music executive Dan Hill, who provided the surname she would use as she became famous. Her first husband was not prominent Canadian singer-songwriter Dan Hill despite the similar name.[6] Two years later, she began a search for her natural mother, whom she eventually met and with whom she corresponded until her mother’s death.[7]

A co-worker heard Hill singing to herself one day, and soon the head of her music publishing company was encouraging her to become a demo singer for the firm.[4] She supplemented this work by singing backup vocals for songwriter Gary Burr, who often performed his new songs at Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe. During one of those performances, an executive from Warner Bros. Records was in the audience, and, impressed with Hill’s voice, began the process of signing her to a recording contract.[2]

Shortly after the release of her album, Hill found her marriage falling apart. She and Dan Hill divorced in 1994.[7]
